De Groot, who has stepped up to the head coach role after Peter Hyballa was sacked, watched NEC snatch a late win over 10-man AZ which keeps them two points from safety with one game left.

De Groot said, ”This is a vital win for the team especially after such a long series of defeats.

”We have to keep working hard with only one game left away against SC Heerenveen. I took over a team with Patrick Pothuizen that were very short on confidence and that is understandable after losing 12 games.

”SC Heerenveen are also playing for a European play-off ticket on the final day of the season in their own stadium so it will not be easy.

”I enjoyed being on the bench today. Naturally I would have preferred it to be under more positive circumstances.”

Ron De Groot is for the 4th time in his career interim manager at NEC Nijmegen.
