Having refused a contract extension from the Arnhem club, there was little debate that Room would be leaving Vitesse after having joined their youth ranks in 2002. Room made 133 appearances for the senior team since 2008 and has matured into one of the better keepers in the Eredivisie, evidenced by his solidification as Curacao’s number 1 goalkeeper, where he made impressive displays at this summer’s Gold Cup.
Until the past few days, it looked like Room would be heading to fellow Dutchman Ronald Koeman’s Everton, where he would battle Maarten Stekelenburg for the second place keeper spot behind first choice Jordan Pickford. Despite the fact his wages may be greater, even being third choice in England, he gave up wages for more first team football.
Current PSV keeper Jeroen Zoet has been largely linked with Crystal Palace and Benfica in recent weeks, and this signing may signal he’ll soon be on his way out.
