Former Utrecht goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter is on trial with English side Sunderland as he looks to prove his fitness.

The keeper has been a free agent since deciding to leave Utrecht when his contract expired at the end of last season, and has been given the chance to earn a contract with Sunderland.

His agent has confirmed to VI that Ruiter will spend two days with the Championship side as he looks to prove his fitness. The 30-year-old missed most of last season through injury.

Dick van Burik said,  “The club wants to see how fit he is. Robbin, of course had not played for six months through injury.

“Robbin makes a very positive impression at Sunderland. He also built his reputation in recent years at FC Utrecht. Now he hopes for a foreign adventure. Sunderland could be a wonderful new chapter in his career. ”

Sunderland are looking for a new goalkeeper after losing Jordan Pickford to Everton.
