ruttFeyenoord were comfortably on course for a top three finish and an automatic Europa league place, but five games without a win at the end of the season have seen the Rotterdam club slip to fourth and 29 points behind champions PSV.

Rutten was set to leave the club at the end of the season, but Feyenoord have now announced that the 52-year-old has been sacked, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst to take over the club for the play-offs.

The former Twente, Schalke and PSV boss took over Feyenoord in the summer, but has failed to build upon the success of former coach Ronald Koeman. Feyenoord face Heerenveen in the first leg of their play-off on Thursday, with Van Bronckhorst taking charge.
