An Amsterdam native, the 40-year-old Schenkel succeeds Benno Nihom who guided Ajax Vrouwen to the league and cup double in the 2017/18 season.

Schenkel’s previous managerial experience comes from his three-season spell as coach of amateur side BFC Bussum football club, and his current role at VV Zwaluwen who play in the second-highest league of amateur football in the Netherlands.

Schenkel is married to Loïs Schenkel, the current captain of the club he takes over in summer, though she has announced her plans to retire at the end of this season.
