PSV Eindhoven head coach Roger Schmidt has looked ahead to Sunday’s clash with Ajax

On Thursday, PSV were eliminated from the Europa League after a 5-4 aggregate loss to Olympiacos.

Schmidt told his press conference, “I think we played a good game tactically and mentally. You can see: if everyone believes in our plan and implements it, then we can play football very well. We cannot change now that we are done in Europe. What does it mean towards Sunday? That we have gained a lot of self-confidence. Even though we are out of the Europa League, yes.”

Schmidt has called for the fans and media to be realistic, “Did you sometimes think that we would win the Europa League? Yes, I would have hoped that too, but you have to be realistic. We should not be ashamed of the fact that we have been eliminated by Olympiacos . Every athlete knows that you not only gain confidence from results, but also from the feeling that fellow players are fighting for you and that you play well.”

On Sunday, PSV face Ajax knowing a defeat would leave them nine points behind the league leaders, who also have a game in hand. However, Schmidt won’t call it as important as a final, “We are no longer in the situation where everything is still possible in the event of a loss. But after 24 games you cannot speak of a final.”

The PSV boss does admit that Ajax are a better side, but only because of their financial power, “We are dealing with a competitor who has other options. Whether they are better? Individually for sure. They have so much more budget. If they weren’t better then something isn’t right. They have a very high level. Their team has a good structure, they have experienced players and great talents. And a lot of money. So if you say that we have as much chance of becoming champions as they do, I disagree.”

Schmidt won’t give up hope though, “Everything is possible in football, that is why so much money is spent and so many people watch it.”
