Serie A side Genoa have confirmed the signing of Ajax midfielder Lasse Schone on a two-year deal.

Schone has been with Ajax for seven years since joining on a free transfer from NEC Nijmegen and now leaves after breaking the record for appearances by a foreign player at the club.

The 33-year-old has decided on a foreign adventure in Italy, with Genoa completing his signing on Friday. The Dane has signed a deal until 2021.

Schone told Ajax TV, “I don’t have to explain to people how I feel about this club.

“It was certainly not easy to make this decision. But this picture is correct: for us as a family and for me as a football player.

“Italy is a country where I used to go on vacation. I love the country of Italy. If you still have the chance to play there in your old football days, and you notice that Genoa really wants you to come, then this is a great adventure.”

Schone expects to return to Netherlands after his spell in Italy and noted he is leaving on a high, “That’s why I said before that this is definitely not goodbye. I think I can leave through the front door, with the last season as the absolute highlight of my time here. It was a fantastic time and I am proud that I have been able to wear Ajax’s shirt so often.”

Schone made 286 appearances for Ajax, scoring 64 goals and adding 52 assists.
