After both sides created a few chances, Twente winger Quincy Promes opened the scoring on 26 minutes, showing fancy footwork around the box before firing into the net.
On 40 minutes Promes added his second with a fantastic shot into the top corner, before minutes later completing his hat-trick with a smart finish after racing clear on the right wing. Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal will have been impressed by the winger, who has given his chances of making the World Cup a huge boost.
In the second half, PSV defender Karim Rekik made it 4-0 by firing into the roof of the net after Marco van Ginkel saw a header from a corner cleared off the line.
Substitute Hakim Ziyech then added two goals in quick succession, firstly looping a volley into the bottom corner from range, and then smashing a first time shot into the net inside the box.
Stevie May pulled a late goal back for Scotland with a low shot into the bottom corner, but overall it was a terrific performance by the young Dutch side, who go back to the top of their qualifying group on goal difference from Slovakia.
There is three more qualifiers for Netherlands U21’s to play before the European Championships next year, but with a game in hand on Slovakia, the Jong Oranje are almost certain to top the group.
