Norway ran out 9-0 winners over San Marino on Thursday and the question was just how many goals Netherlands were gonna score when they faced the minnows on Saturday.
Things started perfectly for Maarten Stekelenburg’s side when Utrecht’s Odysseus Velanas opened the scoring after only three minutes. However, that proved to be the only goal of a first half which saw Netherlands waste chance after chance and early in the second half the floodlights gave out and the game was suspended for half an hour.
When the game finally restarted Ajax forward Kaj Sierhuis saved the Oranje’s blushes with a 14-minute hat-trick that ensured Netherlands ran out 4-0 winners and sealed their place in the next round of qualifying.
Netherlands face group leaders Norway in the final group game on Tuesday.
