Lyon went into the final day of the season in third place which was enough for a place in next season’s Champions League. However, they needed to better or match Marseille’s result to ensure it.

OGC Nice went 1-0 up through Alassane Plea but three minutes into the second half, Memphis Depay equalised from close range. The Dutch international then found the bottom corner with a smart free-kick to make it 2-1 before his chipped finish sealed his hat-trick with four minutes to go.

Plea pulled another one back for Nice, but Lyon held on to their win to make sure they will return to the Champions League group stages next season.

The hat-trick also means Memphis finishes the season as Lyon’s top scorer in Ligue 1 with 19 goals while he also contributed the most assists (13). The forward has been in sensational form for the club since the turn of the year. In his last eight games, he scored nine goals and contributed 7 assists.
