The English side have paid Heerenveen €3 million to sign the 23-year-old, who put pen to paper on his contract until 2021 on Wednesday. The fee could rise with several bonuses agreed between the clubs.
Van Aken made his debut in the Heerenveen first team at the age of 19 and has gone on to make 97 appearances for the Frisian’s. He also has three caps for Netherlands at U21 level.
Heerenveen will look to use the money to sign Utrecht’s Ramon Leeuwin, but 17-year-old Kik Pierie is also seen as a potential replacement for Van Aken.
