De Jong, who is on loan from Newcastle United, admitted that he expected to be booed during the match wearing PSV colours, having won four Eredivisie titles during his time with Ajax.
He said, ”I believe that this game went back and forth in both halves of the pitch. I believe that Ajax had more chances and we had a phase in the first half where we had 2 very good chances.
”Ajax scored a good goal in the 2nd half but after that I believe that we took the initiative and created good chances to score. I believe that it was a good match for the supporters that it could have gone either way. Both teams tried but they could not find a winner.
”I fully understand the mixed reactions and booing from the Ajax supporters and I am happy to have been of importance for PSV in scoring the equalizer.
”I will always have respect for Ajax and the people here and that will always be the case but now I have to show my worth for PSV.”
