The midfielder, who joined PSV Eindhoven in the summer on loan from Newcastle United, completed his first 90 minutes of the season in the 1-1 draw at Heerenveen on Saturday. A day later the KNVB confirmed that De Jong had been called up by Danny Blind for the upcoming games with Belarus and France after his brother Luuk was forced out with a concussion. Its his first call-up to the Dutch national team since 2013.
Speaking to AD, De Jong admitted the call-up was a surprise, “I never thought it would come so soon but this was one of my goals when I went to PSV.
“I did not think it would happen so soon but I did have Oranje have in my head when I went to PSV. I wanted to play a lot of matches, with the aim to get back to the Dutch team. Too bad that it happened because of injuries but nevertheless I am very happy to be here.
“He (Blind) sees me as a kind of striker and also as an attacking midfielder.
“I see this as an opportunity to show what I can do and of course I hope for playing time.”
De Jong has six caps and two goals for Netherlands.
