Wesley Sneijder was emotional after making his final appearance for Netherlands in the 2-1 victory over Peru.

Sneijder played an hour in his 134th and final cap before coming off to a huge ovation from the Johan Cruyff ArenA crowd.

After the game, Sneijder was made an honorary knight by the KNVB and sat in a sofa with his wife and children in the middle of the pitch to watch special messages from Louis van Gaal, Dirk Kuyt, Rafael van der Vaart and Jose Mourinho among others.

He then spoke to NOS and said, “It is a special evening. I enjoyed every second. Fortunately, we still win him. The equalizer was already nice, but that we also win makes the evening complete. It was a nice match.

“I do feel it, inside. It’s finished. It is done. Everything comes to an end and I felt that already this morning when I got up. It is my last game in the Arena and in the Oranje-shirt. I had a fantastic time. “

On the video messages he received, Sneijder added, “I’ve always had a very big mouth, but this does something to me, I’ve had a fantastic time at the Dutch national team, especially the way to the final tournaments, I’m going to miss this a lot.”

Sneijder also had a message for the Netherlands fans, “I promise you: at the next tournament I am standing with you on the Oranje-plein, then we will enjoy these guys. Stay behind Oranje, we need you hard. “
