AZ Alkmaar were punished for wasteful finishing as Fran Sol’s double gave Willem II a 2-0 victory at the AFAS Stadion.

After their draw at VVV last week, AZ looked to return to winning ways on Saturday, but they found themselves behind after only three minutes. Fran Sol’s header was initially kept out by Marco Bizot but Daniel Crowley pounced on the rebound and set up Sol to net.

AZ went in search of an equaliser but Mats Seuntjens was denied twice by Timon Wellenreuther before Oussama Idrissi had an effort cleared off the line. Guus Til also wasted a good chance and Willem II made the home side pay for their wastefulness.

On the half-hour mark, Donis Avdijaj broke free and raced in on goal before the attacker set up Sol to tap in his second of the evening.

At the break, John van den Brom turned to Ferdy Druijff and Dorin Rotariu but the changes didn’t inspire AZ to a comeback. Despite the home side dominating the second half they failed to find a way past Wellenreuther as Willem II held on for the victory.

Willem II rise to 10th with the win and are now only three points behind AZ who sit eighth.
