Groningen went into the game having lost their last five games on the bounce, but they showed signs of recovery in the first half with Lorenzo Burnet almost finishing after an excellent run by Juninho Bacuna.
However the game swung in Vitesse’s favour with the introduction of striker Dominic Solanke in the second half with the on-loan Chelsea star opening the scoring from close range on 73 minutes.
Minutes later Valeri Qazaishvili fired in a second for the visitors, before Solanke settled the match with an excellent chip over Groningen goalkeeper Sergio Padt.
The defeat means Groningen have equaled their worst ever losing run in the division and they now sit 12th, while Vitesse climb back to seventh.
