A stunning early strike by Abdenasser El Khayati gave ADO Den Haag a 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Sparta Rotterdam.

Alfons Groenendijk arrived in Rotterdam full of confidence after three wins and a draw against PSV in their last four games. They knew a win would seal their place in the Eredivisie next season and they took the lead on ten minutes. El Khayati picked up the ball halfway into Sparta’s half before rifling a strike into the top corner off the post.

Mike Havenaar then missed a great chance to make it 2-0 before Sparta were lucky not to give away two penalties for handballs in the box by Mart Dijkstra and Michel Breuer.

Sparta pushed forward in the second half looking for an equaliser, but apart from a blocked Mendes da Silva shot, ADO Den Haag were rarely troubled.

The win lifts ADO up to twelve and they are now mathematically safe while Sparta remain in 16th and have two games to avoid the relegation play-offs.
