Sparta Rotterdam have given themselves a chance of avoiding a bottom three finish with a 2-0 victory over 18th placed Roda JC.

Results elsewhere didn’t go in either side’s favour heading into the game with Willem II and NAC Breda recording victories which pulled them further from the bottom three.

After only 12 minutes, Sparta Rotterdam took the lead through Sander Fischer, who fired past Hidde Jurjus. The hosts failed to recover after the setback and eventually Sparta doubled their lead after the hour as Robert Muhren raced onto Thomas Verhaar’s pass before slotting into the net.

Roda JC should have reduced the deficit shortly afterwards but somehow Mikhail Rosheuvel fired wide from point-blank range after being set up by Simon Gustafson. Donis Avdijaj and Dani Schahin also missed good chances for the hosts before the end as Sparta saw out their crucial victory.

Roda JC remain rooted to the bottom while Sparta are 16th and remain five points behind Willem II and Groningen.
