Stam took over Feyenoord in the summer after Giovanni van Bronckhorst decided to stand down.
However, Feyenoord have had a difficult start to the campaign and currently sit 12th in the Eredivisie with only three wins from eleven games. In the Europa League, they beat Porto, but lost to both Rangers and Young Boys, which leaves them bottom of the group.
On Sunday, Ajax defeated Feyenoord 4-0 in a one-sided De Klassieker, which has proved to be the final straw for Stam, who has decided to stand down as head coach.
Feyenoord technical director Sjaak Troost told the club’s website, “The trainer certainly still had our support and the player group also wanted to continue with him. But if someone says: I no longer believe in it and want no more, we respect that and it will stop. How unfortunate it is.”
