Stekelenburg has worked with several youth teams with Oranje and is the current U19 head coach. He will now join Koeman’s staff as the replacement for Kees van Wonderen, who stepped down earlier this month.
Koeman said on the Ons Oranje website, “Of course I saw him at work at Under-17 and Under-19. His football vision fits in well with that of the Dutch national team. Precisely for that reason, we also searched internally for the filling of the vacancy, together with Nico-Jan Hoogma. Maarten fits in well with our team. ”
Stekelenburg added, “After all the good years with the KNVB youth teams, this is of course an excellent opportunity to work at the highest level. I am looking forward to joining the Dutch national team. That is a great opportunity, especially with a view to the European Championships this summer. ”
For the European Championships, Ruud van Nistelrooy will also be an assistant with the Dutch national team. The current PSV U19 head coach will join up with Koeman’s staff for the tournament.
Van Nistelrooy said, “It is a challenge that I am taking with both hands and I will do everything to contribute to a successful European Championship.”
