After more than a year out, Calvin Stengs returned to the pitch during AZ Alkmaar’s 1-0 friendly win over Cambuur on Tuesday.

The young winger suffered a serious knee injury during AZ Alkmaar’s first game of last season against PSV Eindhoven and has been out ever since.

The promising talent returned to the pitch on Tuesday, though, playing 45 minutes of AZ’s friendly match with Cambuur.

After the game, Stengs told AZ TV, “I’m happy, relieved, I made my first minutes again in just under 14 months and it went well..

“I heard last week that I was allowed to join in. I immediately spoke to my mother and let people know that I would play again.”

Asked if he was nervous, Stengs replied, “Joy especially, but also math tension, maybe more than usual today, I thought: nice, we’re going to start again, I can continue with what I was doing.”
