Ajax held off a comeback from Volendam to record a much-needed 4-3 victory.

Despite being defeated 6-1 by Napoli in midweek, Alfred Schreuder decided to stick with the same starting eleven. He stated that the players were looking for revenge as they came up against the side currently sitting bottom of the table.

Volendam started the game brightly but it was Ajax that took the lead in the 17th minute. A wonderful action by Steven Berghuis led to a penalty for handball. Dusan Tadic netted his first goal of the season from the spot.

Volendam came close to an equaliser when Gaetano Oristanio connected with an overhead kick, but Remko Pasveer made the save. Five minutes before the break, Calvin Bassey headed Ajax 2-0 in front from a Berghuis cross.

On the hour, Schreuder brought on Brian Brobbey and Davy Klaassen and the former added the third goal. He raced onto a Jurrien Timber pass before finishing calmly.

Ajax seemed to be on their way to a comfortable victory, but the home side pulled one back thanks to 17-year-old substitute Lequincio Zeefuik. The striker showed some strength before hitting the ball tamely towards goal, but it sneaked under Pasveer.

Volendam then had two quick chances to score again but Ajax survived. However, Carel Eiting did make it 2-3 with a strike from the edge of the box. Minutes later, Henk Veerman had the ball in the net and celebrated the 3-3 but the offside flag was raised and it was ruled out.

Ajax were nervous but in stoppage, Klaassen tapped in from close range to seal the victory.

Ajax now face Napoli again in midweek in Italy but they are now back to the top of the table. Volendam stay bottom.
