There was no winner in the Derby of the North on Sunday as Groningen earned a 1-1 draw at Heerenveen.

The start of the game was slow with neither goalkeeper having much to do. The first big chance fell to Heerenveen but Joey Veerman’s strike hit the post.

In the 43rd minute, Heerenveen did take the lead with Siem de Jong finishing off a set-up by Henk Veerman. It was De Jong’s first goal in the Eredivisie since 2018.

Paulos Abraham almost equalised on the hour mark but he shot wide, while Jørgen Strand Larsen headed against the crossbar.

Eventually, in the 82nd minute, Groningen did equalise as Tomas Suslov found a way past Erwin Mulder.

The point keeps Groningen clear of Utrecht in sixth, while Heerenveen are 10th.
