The home side made a good start to the game and eventually took the lead just before the half hour mark with Henk Veerman calmly slotting past Brad Jones after racing through on goal.
NEC barely threatened in the first half but coach Ernest Faber decided to change tactic and one of his substitutes, Joey Sleegers, equalised on 65 minutes. The midfielder’s shot was deflected past a helpless Erwin Mulder.
Before the end both team could have snatched the win, but the best chance fell to Heerenveen when Rens van Eijden brought down Te Vrede, earning the home side a penalty and NEC a red card. However, Te Vrede’s spot kick was pushed to safety by Jones and NEC hung on for a point.
Heerenveen remain 12th while NEC sit 7th.
