Ajax boss Erik ten Hag does not believe his side are favourites for their clash with Benfica on Tuesday despite an excellent start to their Champions League campaign.

Ajax head into Tuesday’s clash top of their group after a simple win over AEK Athens and a credible draw at Bayern Munich. However, ten Hag has waved away claims coming from Benfica that they are the underdogs in Amsterdam.

He told his press conference, “That surprises me. We will have to prove it again every match.

“We are not the favourite. We play very well and have confidence in the match against Bayern Munich, but we know that Benfica is a very strong team. I think we are equal and the odds are fifty-fifty. If we have a good day, we have a great chance of winning.”

Ten Hag admitted that the tie with Benfica is crucial, “To call this a key contest is a cliché, but it is true. We have to win in the home games. But if it turns out that a draw is the maximum, then you have to embrace it. We go for the win and if that succeeds, we are very happy with it. “
