Brian Tevreden, technical director of Reading FC, has revealed that he almost appointed Erik ten Hag as the club’s new head coach.

In the summer of 2016, Reading was looking for a new head coach after the resignation of Brian McDermott.

Tevreden has revealed he approached Utrecht and spoke with Erik ten Hag. He told the FC Afkicken podcast,  “I spoke to him. He was my number one, I wanted to bring him in.”

However, Utrecht did not want Ten Hag to leave, “I had to declare three hundred thousand as a lump sum payment, but I did not have that. If I had had that money, Erik ten Hag would have become a trainer at Reading.”

Tevreden instead appointed Jaap Stam, while Ten Hag would stay in Utrecht before moving to Ajax.
