Erik ten Hag believes he picked his strongest available eleven despite Ajax losing 3-0 at PSV Eindhoven on Sunday.

Ajax were without Matthijs de Ligt against the defending Eredivisie champions, with Ten Hag again deciding to partner Daley Blind with Frenkie de Jong in the centre of defence. PSV took advantage of their defensive frailty in running out 3-0 winners.

After the game, Ten Hag told Fox Sports, “We started the season well, but this is an incredible damper. PSV was sharper and we are trumped. I did not expect that. We had pointed it out after AEK. We should have played bolder and with more guts, then you see that you can play through them with moments. We did not do that.”

Asked whether Max Wober would have been a better option to replace De Ligt, Ten Hag responded, “No, last time we also lost with Wöber. With Frenkie we were very good at AEK. In my opinion, this was the best choice.”

Ten Hag concluded on his side’s performance, “We played good football this season so far, but I have not seen anything of that today. We must learn from this; this is not possible.”
