Erik ten Hag lined up with Wout Weghorst as an attacking midfielder again while Frenkie de Jong was finally playing at Old Trafford after the speculation linking him heavily to Manchester United in the summer.
Barcelona opened the scoring in the 18th minute with Robert Lewandowski netting a penalty following a foul by Bruno Fernandes.
At the break, Ten Hag intervened with ex-Ajax winger Antony replacing Weghorst, and two minutes into the second half, Fred equalised. Antony then put Manchester United ahead in the 73rd minute on a rebound.
Barcelona tried to equalise but Manchester United held on to book their place in the last 16. Manchester United continue their excellent form and will now focus on their League cup final against Newcastle United this weekend.
