Excelsior defeated VVV Venlo 1-0 in Rotterdam to register their second victory of the campaign.

VVV went into the game in sixth place and full of confidence after a strong start to the campaign, while Excelsior had only won one of their opening six matches.

Excelsior made a strong start to the game and in the 20th minute they had the lead thanks to a fantastic solo effort from Elias Mar Omarsson, who picked up the ball in his own half before racing forward and slotting in the opener.

Jay-Roy Grot came close to an equaliser for VVV Venlo but the post came to the home side’s rescue. After the break, VVV controlled the game as they searched for the leveller but a Ralf Seuntjens strike which went just wide was the closest they came.

Excelsior were reduced to ten men late on when Ali Messaoud was shown a straight red card, but they held on to claim the three points.
