The 2018/19 Eredivisie season began with a five-goal thriller as 10-man Heerenveen defeat PEC Zwolle 3-2.

Both sides began slowly with no real chances in the opening phase but in the 28th minute the game burst into life. Doke Schmidt pulled down Vito van Crooij to earn the hosts a penalty which Mike van Duinen dispatched to make it 1-0.

However, Heerenveen were only behind for four minutes before Morten Thorsby rose to head in a corner. The Norwegian then netted his second with a lovely volleyed finish into the bottom corner in the 39th minute. Before the break it was 3-1 with Thorsby setting up Arber Zeneli to race into the box and fire past Diederik Boer from a tight angle.

PEC Zwolle went into the second half looking for a way back into the match and after ten minutes they were awarded a penalty in historic fashion. Thorsby handled on the line and was shown a straight red card. A new feature this season, VAR was checked but the decision stood. Van Duinen netted his second spot-kick to make it 3-2.

The home side then missed several chances for the equaliser with Warner Hahn denying Van Duinen before Daniel Høegh cleared Zian Flemming’s effort off the line and Gustavo Hamer shot wide.

Heerenveen held on through four minutes of injury time to book their first win of the campaign under new head coach Jan Olde Riekerink.
