Hidde Ter Avest’s last-minute header earned Utrecht a 3-3 draw against PEC Zwolle.

Utrecht went into the game on the back of three wins including the victory over AZ Alkmaar in midweek. Confidence was high, especially with Sander van de Streek, who opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a header from an Adam Maher free-kick.

However, the lead was short-lived before Virgil Misidjan weaved his way into the box before finding the net to equalise from a tight angle.

Van de Streek went close to making it 2-1 for the hosts, but Xander Mous kept his effort out. Then five minutes before the break, Willem Janssen fouled Immanuel Pherai and Thomas Lam made it 2-1 for PEC Zwolle from the penalty spot.

In the 54th minute, Utrecht got a penalty of their own for a foul by Sam Kersten and Maher made it 2-2.

An error from Utrecht stopper Eric OelschlΓ€gel then gifted Thomas Buitink the ball and he fired PEC Zwolle back in front in the 67th minute. It was his first goal for the club since his loan from Vitesse Arnhem.

Utrecht pushed for an equaliser but Moussa Sylla put a great chance wide from close range and it appeared PEC Zwolle were going to hold on despite having Bram van Polen sent-off. However, in the 94th minute, Hidde Ter Avest headed in an equaliser for the hosts.

The point means Utrecht are eighth, while PEC Zwolle are down in 13th.
