The 20-year-old has been with Utrecht since 2010 and his progression to the cusp of the Dutch senior side has been a joy to witness.

Ramselaar made his debut in the 2014/15 campaign and went on to make five appearances, scoring one goal. This was proceeded by last season, where he gained a much more important role in the side, playing in all of Utrecht’s Eredivisie games and adding four goals to his league tally.

He is an attacking midfielder and has linked very well with a forward line containing the likes of Sébastien Haller, Ruud Boymans and Nacer Barazite.

Ramselaar received his first call up to represent the senior Netherlands team in May 2016 for the friendly matches against Ireland and Austria, but had to pull out of the squad through injury.

Playing Style

The slight midfielder is nimble, quick and very threatening around the opposition’s penalty area. He can shoot and is good at finding space with his movement in the box to pick out a pass. Despite Ramselaar’s build, he is relatively strong and is brave in trying to win the ball. Although at times, he can prove to be the weak link in Utrecht’s midfield when defending.

What does this season hold for Ramselaar?

Utrecht’s system suits Ramselaar. The tall strikers win the aerial battles that he can then feed off in the area. If the club’s strikers leave and aren’t properly replaced, Ramselaar’s style of play could be compromised.

As long as Erik Ten Hag is in charge of Utrecht Ramselaar should find himself playing regular football in a system constructed for him, so expect more goals and assists this season. A recall to the Oranje is well within reach.
