Qualification for Euro 2016 is no longer in Netherlands hands after they were beaten 3-0 by Turkey.

cill turkA lack of concentration has cost Netherlands dearly in the qualification campaign so far. Daryl Janmaat’s slack back-pass against Czech Republic cost a point, and the red card for Bruno Martins Indi midweek led to the defeat to Iceland last Thursday.

Danny Blind called on his players to rise to the occasion in Turkey and at least get the draw which would keep them in charge of their own destiny. However those defensive errors which have plagued the Dutch national team popped up again, with Turkey leading after only eight minutes as Oguzhan Ozyakup, a former Netherlands youth international, was allowed to waltz onto Arda Turan’s through ball unchallenged before lifting the ball over Jasper Cillessen.

Netherlands pushed for an equaliser, but on 26 minutes Daley Blind mis-controlled a throw in, allowing Turan to steal the ball and send a shot under Jasper Cillessen, who should have done much better.

The second half saw Turkey sit deep and come under intense pressure from Netherlands, but chances were few and far between, and eventually Burak Yilmaz sealed victory for the home side with five minutes left, spinning in the box before sending a shot into the top corner.

Another disastrous result to add to a horrible campaign, which leaves Netherlands needing to win their last two qualifiers against Kazakhstan and the Czech Republic next month, and hope that Turkey lose to either the Czech’s or Iceland (or draw both). Hope is still alive for Netherlands, but unless performances dramatically improve then the Oranje will miss out on a European Championships for the first time since 1982.
