An early header from centre-back Joachim Andersen was enough for Twente to record a victory over local rivals Heracles Almelo.

The hosts began the derby on top and after only ten minutes, Bersant Celina found space on the right hand side to whip in a cross for Joachim Andersen to head powerfully past Bram Castro.

Enes Unal thought he had doubled Twente’s lead on the half hour mark but his goal was disallowed for offside, while Castro made a fine save to deny Celina. At the other end, Heracles were dangerous and Nick Marsman had to make good stops from Samuel Armenteros and Brandley Kuwas before the break.

In the second half Vincent Vermeij was brought off the bench by Heracles and the striker had a massive opportunity to equalise but got his finish all wrong in front of goal.

Unal got the best opportunity of the second half but the Turk couldn’t add a second for Twente with his strike coming back off the post. The miss didn’t prove crucial as Twente held on to record their first victory of 2017, which puts them in 7th, while Heracles remain 11th.
