News broke before the game that Rene Hake would continue to coach FC Twente until the end of the season, and he would have been pleased with his side during the first half as they dominated NEC Nijmegen. Hakim Ziyech was unsurprisingly behind most of Twente’s chances in the first half as he set up Ede to drag a good chance wide, before the midfielder saw a goal-bound shot blocked on the stroke of half time.
Twente continued to press forward after the break and finally got their reward on 67 minutes when a corner found its way to Peet Bijen at the back post and the defender smashed the ball into the net from close range.
The home side hung onto the win despite ferocious attacks from the way side which saw Mohamed Rayhi hit the post, and goalkeeper Joel Drommel make a terrific save to deny Navorone Foor.
Twente rise to 15th after the win, while NEC remain 7th.
