The home side took an early lead through Kyle Ebicilio’s free kick after only five minutes, and should have been further in front before the break, but both Hakim Ziyech and Luc Castaignos missed good chances. At the other end Utrecht barely troubled and Nick Marsman had only one save to make from Mark Diemers.
Early in the second half Utrecht came close to equalising when Marsman was beaten by Gevero Markiet’s header, but Youness Mokhtar was on the line to prevent the goal.
Twente found a second goal with a stroke of luck as Luc Castaignos’s dink over the goalkeeper was going wide, but it hit Christian Kum, and the defender could only steer the ball into his own net.
Utrecht did not give up though and Yassine Ayoub pulled a goal back with a vicious strike into the top corner from the edge of the box. but the midfielder was sent off with a minute to go to kill their chances of a come back. In the final minute Luc Castaignos sealed the win with a powerful shot into the bottom corner for his 5th goal of the season.
The win moves Twente up to fourth, and they remain unbeaten in their opening seven matches, while Utrecht sit 9th.
