Both sides came into this evenings all Overijssel tie in poor form and both needed a win at either side of the Eredivisie table. A win for PEC Zwolle would lift them firmly into a European play off spot, whereas a victory for the Enschede side would see them move to within a point of Sparta Rotterdam in 17th.

From the first minute, it was clear which team were fighting for their lives, Twente dominated the opening stages and eventually on the 21st minute, Jeroen Van der Lely slotted home after Oussama Assaidi’s effort was cleared to make it 1-0.

The home side continued to press for a second and their hard work paid off when Michael Maria tapped in a nicely played through ball by Assaidi in the 35th minute.

Play evened out in the second-half, however, with PEC Zwolle enjoying plenty of possession without causing the home side too many problems.

Twente comfortably managed to see out a very impressive win which means they cannot be relegated on Wednesday. They will be hoping NAC Breda can pull off an away win against Sparta Rotterdam tomorrow to keep the gap at one point going into the final two game weeks.

PEC Zwolle remain 7th but could be out of the European play-off spots, should Heerenveen or ADO Den Haag win their match later on Tuesday.
