Oussama Assaidi netted twice as FC Twente claimed a much-needed 2-1 victory over NAC Breda.

Gertjan Verbeek had yet to taste victory since becoming FC Twente boss and a string of bad results had seen the Tukkers slip to 18th in the table. The coach decided to change his goalkeeper with Jorn Brondeel heading to the bench after a poor display against ADO Den Haag and Joel Drommel took his place.

NAC had the better of the first half but struggled to create clear-cut chances, while at the other end Twente claimed a penalty after a handball by Giovanni Korte, but nothing was given.

Three minutes into the second half, Assaidi fired Twente ahead with a shot from distance which Nigel Bertrams should have saved but failed hopelessly.

NAC equalised just after the hour mark with Peet Bijen diverting Thierry Ambrose’s shot into his own net. However, two minutes later, Assaidi restored Twente’s lead with a great strike into the top corner after being given too much time to take a shot.

NAC pushed for a draw but were denied by the post and the referee, who didn’t award a penalty after handball by Simon Thesker. In injury time the hosts were reduced to ten men when Bertrams came racing out of goal to take down Luciano Slagveer, earning himself a straight red card.

The win lifts Twente up to 15th in the table and above NAC who slide into the bottom three.
