FC Twente were a team full of confidence in Limburg and they took the lead in the 15th minute. Keito Nakamura controlled Aitor Cantalapiedra’s fine ball before slotting past Alexei Koselev.
Eight minutes later, Nakamura turned provider as he set up Javier Espinosa to dribble into the area before firing perfectly into the top corner.
FC Twente were comfortable but on the stroke of half-time, Nakamura clumsily brought down Felix Passlack. Referee Dennis Higler didn’t produce a card at first but after consulting VAR he sent Nakamura off.
Despite playing with ten men, FC Twente made it 3-0 in the 66th minute when Giorgio Aburjania slotted in on the rebound after Koselev has denied Aitor.
In the 78th minute, Haris Vuckic slid a cross into his own net to give Fortuna Sittard hope but shortly afterwards the hosts were also reduced to ten men. Marc Pinto brought down Rafik Zekhnini, who had broken in on goal and was shown red.
Amadou Ciss did make it 3-2 in injury time but that proved to be nothing but a consolation.
FC Twente are now third behind Ajax and PSV Eindhoven while Fortuna Sittard are down in 17th.
