Ajax U19’s remains top of their UEFA Youth League group after earning a 3-3 draw at Benfica.

Johnny Heitinga’s side are unbeaten in the competition so far and headed to Benfica looking for their third win. However, after twelve minutes they found themselves behind to a Nuno Santos penalty.

Ajax fought back and after a missed chance for Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, Brian Brobbey equalised just before the break after nice work by Noa Lang on the wing.

Three minutes into the second half, Ekkelenkamp made it 2-1 for Ajax with a scrappy goal before Nicolas Kühn added a third on the rebound.

It seemed Ajax were heading for a comfortable victory, but in the 73rd minute, Sven Botman conceded another penalty, which Tiago Dantas netted to make it 3-2. Gonçalo Ramos then netted an equaliser seven minutes from the end with a header to earn Benfica a point.

Ajax stay top of the group and one point ahead of both Benfica and Bayern Munich. A win in their final two games against AEK Athens or Bayern should seal the Dutch side’s place in the knockout round.
