AZ Alkmaar have reached the playoff round of the UEFA Youth League after a penalty shootout win over Crvena Zvezda. The clash finished 1-1 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate.

The first leg in Alkmaar finished 2-2 last week meaning the tie was up in the air. Fifteen minutes from the end, Ernest Poku fired AZ in front.

It appeared, AZ were going to ease into the next round when they were awarded a penalty but Mexx Meerdink missed from the spot. Almost immediately, the hosts went down the other end and Stefan Lekovic made it 1-1.

Nick Twisk was then sent off for AZ, who took the game to penalties. Wouter Goes missed his spot kick, but AZ still managed to seal their progression with Crvena Zvezda missing two.

AZ now progresses to the playoff and they will be in the draw on November 8th along with Ajax.
