John Heitinga’s side dominated from the start but Kaj Sierhuis and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp missed two good chances. Legia Warsaw barely threatened but in the 31st minute they took the lead in freak circumstances. Navajo Bakboord hit a routine backpass to Issam El Maach but the goalkeeper kicked fresh air and the ball ended up in the back of the net.
In the 41st minute, Ajax were level as Sierhuis hammered Ekkelenkamp’s cross into the roof of the net. Eight minutes into second half it was 2-1 for the Dutch side with Darren Sidoel finding the net with a stunning strike from range.
Sierhuis then sealed Ajax’s victory in the 81st minute with a stunning volley from a corner before Victor Jensen added a fourth late on.
