Enes Unal hit a first-half hat-trick as a late Jari Oosterwijk strike saw FC Twente beat Groningen 4-3 in the Euroborg.

unal ziySearching for their first three points of the season Rene Hake decided to bring Unal into the starting eleven in place of Jari Oosterwijk and the Turkish international justified his selection in spectacular fashion in the first half.

On 23 minutes Unal dribbled past two opponents before curling an effort into the top corner and he added his second with an acrobatic effort from Hakim Ziyech’s cross thirteen minutes later. The forward then became the first Turkish player to net a hat-trick in the Eredivisie with a long-range effort which flew past Sergio Padt just before the break.

Groningen were hopeless in the first half, but they got themselves back in the game early in the second half through Mimoun Mahi and with twenty minutes left Oussama Idrissi fired in another as the home side tasted a comeback. Groningen believed they had snatched a point when Danny Hoesen equalised with a lovely free kick, but in the dying minutes Jari Oosterwijk finished off a smooth attack to hand Twente the three points.

Twente will be relieved with their first win of the season, but Groningen are still pointless after three matches and Ernest Faber will be concerned by his defence which has leaked 11 goals already.
