Despite doubts over her fitness, Lieke Martens lined-up for Netherlands in their first ever World Cup final. Dominique Bloodworth came in at left back in place of Merel van Dongen as Sarina Wiegman opted for a compact 4-4-1-1 formation.
Pundits were predicting a simple USA win but Netherlands managed to frustrate the Top ranked nation in Women’s football for the first half. In the 26th minute, Netherlands got a big chance when Lineth Beerensteyn raced through but the end finish was not there. At the other end, Sari van Veenendaal saved a volley by Julie Ertz.
Just before the break, Samantha Mewis and Alex Morgan went close, but Van Veenendaal and the post kept the score level.
Netherlands kept the US at bay until the hour mark when Van der Gragt was punished for a high-foot on Morgan. Megan Rapinoe made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-0.
Netherlands pushed for an equaliser but that opened up space and Rose Lavelle took advantage to fire the American’s 2-0 up in the 69th minute.
From that point on, Netherlands resistance was gone and there could have been further goals before the end if not for Van Veenendaal.
Just like the men did on this day in 1974, Netherlands women are defeated in their first World Cup final. However, Wiegman’s side can be proud of their efforts in reaching this stage.
Proud of the ladies for a great tournament! They have nothing to be ashamed for.
However, I have to pick a bone with that penalty call. If you watch the replay close, yes that was a high leg AWAY from the US player, who ran into the high leg. For me, there was no malicious intent, nor was the US player about to score or take a shot at goal.
That penalty changed the game and ultimately blew up the Dutch plans.
Very disappointing use of VAR, especially if we take into account the Copa America miscarriages of justice against countries like Argentina
