A stunning goal from Lasse Schone sealed a crucial win for Ajax which keeps them five points behind Feyenoord.

Ajax hadn’t recorded a victory at Utrecht since 2009 and it was the home side who created the better chances in the first half, with Richairo Zivkovic hitting the bar, while Nacer Barazite and Sebastien Haller both fired off target from good positions.

At the other end, Ajax struggled to bring Kasper Dolberg into the game, but Anwar El Ghazi fired over early on, while Hakim Ziyech’s long range effort was scooped onto the bar by David Jensen.

After the hour mark, Ajax were awarded a penalty when Amin Younes cut in from the left before seeing his cross hit the arm of Barazite. Schone stepped up but blazed his penalty over the bar.

Giovanni Troupee should have made Ajax pay for the miss but in loads of space in the box, the young right-back could only blaze over. Moments later, Justin Kluivert won a free-kick on the byline, which Utrecht couldn’t clear and Schone made up for his miss with a stunning volley which flew into the top corner.

That goal was enough to end Ajax’s eight-year wait for a win in Utrecht and kept them five points behind leaders Feyenoord.
