Utrecht have once again proved to be Frank de Boer’s bogey team as Ajax fell to a late 1-0 defeat at the Stadion Galgenwaard.

Before this tie Utrecht had taken 17 points off Ajax under Frank de Boer’s reign, more than any other side in the Eredivisie. To combat the home’s side’s dangerous 4-4-2 formation, De Boer opted for a 3-4-3 to start the game, but both teams cancelled each other out in a scrappy first half.
A disallowed Sebastien Haller goal proved to be the highlight of the first half, with Ajax unable to really test Robbin Ruiter, who’s only job was to save a close range Anwar El Ghazi strike.
The game failed to open up after the break and was heading for a 0-0 draw until Yassin Ayoub latched onto Bart Ramselaar’s lay-off on 87 minutes before sliding the ball into the net.
Feyenoord’s draw with Groningen means Ajax’s lead has been cut to two points, while Utrecht rise to sixth.
