The first half was a drab affair with Groningen failing to create chances while Utrecht were unable to turn their dominance into goals.
Changes were needed in the second half and Utrecht brought on Ruud Boymans, who has missed the start of the season with a shoulder injury, for his debut and the striker made an instant impact. Five minutes after coming on Boymans raced onto a fine pass from Tommy Oar and finished past Sergio Padt.
Groningen had an excellent chance to equalise when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Jarchinio Antonio, but Tjarron Chery saw his spot kick kept out by Robbin Ruiter.
The win sees Utrecht leap to seventh place while Groningen languish in tenth after their second straight defeat.
