In an uninspiring first half it was the away side who had the best chance, but Tjarron Chery couldn’t find the net when one on one with Robbin Ruiter.
Utrecht had the chance to take the lead just after the break when they were awarded a penalty for a handball by Michael de Leeuw. However Steve De Ridder’s fierce spot kick came crashing back off the bar.
Jens Toornstra was unlucky to see his curling free kick come back off the post as Utrecht began to dominate the second half.
With five minutes to go it was Groningen’s turn to hit the woodwork as Chery’s sliding effort came back off the bar with Ruiter well beaten.
Finally with two minutes left Utrecht found the winning goal as Steve De Ridder laid the ball off to Johan Martensson, who unleashed a powerful shot which flew past Marco Bizot from 25 yards.
The relief could be felt around the stadium at full time and Utrecht rise out of the bottom three and into 13th spot.
