The home side would have been hoping for a straight forward victory but they fell behind in the 16th minute, as Dion Malone capitalised on some poor defending to race clear on goal and finish past David Jensen.
Richairo Zivkovic found himself back in the starting eleven in place of Sebastien Haller, and the striker drew Utrecht level on 40 minutes, tapping in Giovanni Troupee’s excellent cross at the back post.
ADO Den Haag were then left incensed on the stroke of half time when it appeared that Robin van de Meer brought down Guyon Fernandez in the box, but to the amazement of the away side referee Serdar Gözübüyük failed to award a spot-kick.
After the break, Utrecht dominated but Yassin Ayoub’s strike came back off the bar while Robert Zwinkels made a good save to deny Sofyan Amrabat. The point means Utrecht are three points clear of AZ in fourth, while ADO Den Haag remain bottom.
