Twente were by far the better side in a scrappy first half, and deservedly took the lead on 18 minutes as Quincy Promes was left unmarked at the back post to smash in a half volley.
In a rare Utrecht attack they could have equalised before the break, but after a scramble in the box Mark van der Maarel’s poked shot came back off the post.
Less than 10 seconds into the second half Utrecht did find an equaliser, as Tommy Oar ran at the Twente defence before sending a low shot into the bottom corner.
Twente then missed two glorious chances to win the game, with Torgeir Borven sending a point blank header into Ruiter’s arms before Kyle Ebecilio hit a shot straight at the keeper from the edge of the box.
The point moves Utrecht four points away from danger, while Twente climb back into 2nd place.
